Luke Sorensen

“Hi, I’m Luke, and I genuinely care about people.”

Shame, identity, grief, and repairing what is broken between people.

Luke Sorensen

What he means by a friend

He’ll sit in the mud puddle with me. He doesn’t try to pull me out of the mud puddle. He doesn’t try to clean me off. He doesn’t tell me the mud puddle is the wrong place. He just listens.

Luke Sorensen, episode 187

He has a name for those men. Mud puddle friends. He says he is a friend of a thousand and can count the middle-of-the-night ones on one hand, and that when you ask him to name them, he gets to two.

Most men do not need more friends. They need two or three who will sit down in it with them.

What he teaches

The things men carry and will not say

Luke joined Men After God in its second season and has led its hardest material since: trauma and what stays stuck after it, grief and how a man moves through it instead of around it, and the lies a man repeats to himself until he believes they are his name.

He is an emotional intelligence coach, so he brings the clinical language into the room and then puts Scripture underneath it. That combination is why men who would never attend a counseling appointment will sit through one of his episodes.

Shame and identity

The difference between guilt and shame, and the three lies underneath most of it.

Grief and trauma

What gets stuck after a hard thing, and why the size of the event is not the measure.

Repair

Apology that costs something, forgiveness, boundaries, and rebuilding trust.

In his own words

Guilt says I made a mistake. Shame says I am the mistake.

Episode 163, Breaking the Lies Men Believe

Secrecy is shame’s oxygen. Confession suffocates it.

Episode 163

No one should have to cry alone.

Episode 187, Why Men Feel Alone

Speaking to men on the hard material

If the men you lead are carrying something nobody is talking about, this is the conversation he is built for. Tell us what is going on and we will tell you whether it is a fit.
